FUNICULAR

ケーブルカー[KEIBURUKĀ]

Funicular trains can climb very steep hills that ordinary trains cannot and are seen in many parts of Japan, over 70% of which consists of mountains. A funicular uses two counterbalanced passenger cars attached to opposite ends of the same cable, which is looped over a pully at the upper end of the track. Requiring little or no electricity, they are attracting attention recently as a sustainable transport system. Climbing a mountain on a funicular train is like being in a museum. The train must move very slowly so we can enjoy the breathtaking views of mountains as if watching pieces of art framed by the window.
