GREAT BUDDHA OF KAMAKURA

鎌倉大仏[KAMAKURA-DAIBUTSU]

Just an hour away from central Tokyo by train sits the Great Buddha in the old city of Kamakura. This humongous bronze statue measuring 11.5 meters in height mostly retains its original appearance and is designated as a National Treasure. It used to be housed in a large building, which was destroyed by a tsunami, and now sits in the open air. The statue is hollow, and visitors can view the interior. Once, the whole statue was covered with gold leaf but no longer. Its head is tilted forward slightly, not because it is embarrassed about losing its golden glow, but to allow the visitors to see its eyes.
