JAPAN NATIONAL STADIUM

国立競技場[KOKURITSU-KYŌGIJŌ]

A new stadium with a seating capacity of approximately 60,000 situated in the greenery-filled outer garden of Meiji Jingu. Its reconstruction was completed in 2019 following the demolition of the old National Stadium, which served as the main stadium for the 1964 Summer Olympics. The new stadium was designed under the concept of “Mori no Stadium (Shrine Forest Stadium)” and uses 2,000 m3 of locally produced timber that covers its roofs and facades almost entirely. When you walk around the site, you will notice a slight scent given off by wood called phytoncide, which is known to have relaxing and refreshing effects. As the host country of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Japan wishes to provide as comfortable an environment as possible for the athletes and spectators.
