TAKACHIHO GORGE

高千穂峡[TAKACHIHO-KYŌ]

A 7 km-long V-shaped gorge in Miyazaki Prefecture in the southeastern part of Kyushu. The mystical landscape, with the giant columnar joints and emerald-green river, is designated a natural monument in Japan. Thousands of tourists come to the area each year to enjoy the scenic beauty by boat or by walking along the pathway. Takachiho has a history of being the considered the site for the legend of the descent of the Sun Goddess’s grandson to earth (“Tenson Korin”), and there are many spots that indicate that the legend took place in this area. The columnar joints were formed due to rapid cooling of an ancient lava flow from Mt. Aso. I can’t believe the lava from Mt. Aso traveled some tens of kilometers down to the gorge. I had no idea that the spectacular geological feature was a trace of natural disaster.
