INFORMAL JAPANESE BAR

居酒屋[IZAKAYA]

A casual type of bar that serves inexpensive alcoholic drinks and meals. Izakaya are usually crowded with salaried workers for after-work drinking. An increasing number of international tourists are also including izakaya in their itineraries in lieu of high-end restaurants to experience “real Japan.” Upon being seated at izakaya, the customers are first served a tiny snack or appetizer called otōshi. This small gesture of omotenashi, however, is not free. So, don’t be surprised if it is charged on your bill.
