A-BOMB DOME(HIROSHIMA PEACE MEMORIAL)

原爆ドーム[GENBAKU DŌMU]

The site of the world’s first A-bomb attack in August 1945. The ruin of the building is preserved as a memorial of the tragedies of war and a symbol of peace. It is part of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial that was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The building was also the place where Japan’s first baumkuchen (layered cake) was made and sold. My late grandpa often used to say, “I can never forget the first bite of baumkuchen I took when I was a kid. Who could have imagined that such a nostalgic place would become the A-bomb Dome?”
