FLOWER VIEWING

花見[HANAMI]

A popular spring event in Japan where people gather under blossoming trees to enjoy a party while appreciating the beautiful flowers. “Hana” means flower in Japanese, and “Hama-mi” typically refers to viewing of cherry blossoms. The famous proverb “Hana yori dango,” which literally means “one prefers dango (sweet rice dumplings) than flowers,” implies people or situations that give precedence to material pursuits over beauty and elegance. Blossoming of cherry flowers still makes news in today’s Japan and shines bright among topics most of which seem so negative these days.
