HORSE RIDING

乗馬[JŌBA]

In ancient Japan, only samurais were allowed to ride horses. Because of this background, many Japanese still think that horse riding is for the nobility. Today, anyone can try riding a horse at equine clubs, resort facilities, etc., and there are also horse trekking tours on beaches and through the countryside. “It felt like being a cowboy,” says my son, pointing at the family photo of our horse-trekking tour. Sitting on a saddle chair with his spine straight, he indeed looked a different person from the hunched-back boy immersed in playing a smartphone game.
