ODEN

おでん[ODEN]

A hot pot dish especially popular during winter made from various ingredients stewed together in dashi stock. Popular ingredients include daikon radish, potatoes, boiled eggs, konnyaku (yam jelly), and nerimono (cakes of ground fish). Because of the simple taste of dashi stock that goes well with just about any ingredients, we now see novel types of oden with whole tomatoes and stuffed cabbage rolls. The easiest way to get oden in Japan is to go to a convenience store, where you are sure to find a pot of oden simmering next to the cash register.
