RICE BALL

おにぎり[ONIGIRI]

A unique Japanese food made from steamed rice formed into triangular, ball, or cylindrical shapes, stuffed with favorite fillings, and usually wrapped with nori (dried seaweed). Requiring no chopsticks, they make an ideal picnic food especially for schoolchildren when going on excursions. On arrival at the mountain top, a teacher would say, “Good work everyone, let’s have lunch.” Kids would open their lunch boxes and find parent-made onigiri. “What’s in it?” They’d take a bite. “Yay, it’s salted salmon!” Munch, munch, yum, yum... Onigiri puts smiles on their faces and sticky rice grains on their fingers.
