NOH

能楽[NOH]

A classical form of Japanese musical theater inscribed in 2008 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO as Nōgaku theatre. Noh depicts tragic mythological/historical stories performed by actors wearing a mask called Noh-men. In a performance event, several Noh plays are performed alternately with Kyōgen plays, which are lighter and comical and usually composed of everyday themes of common folk. You can watch Noh plays in special facilities called Nōhgaku-dō. Noh is difficult to appreciate even for many Japanese. Doing some preparatory study may be key to enjoying this classical art.
