DUNE

砂丘[SAKYU]

A landform, a hill of loose sand built by wind. Dunes called sakyu in Japan are located near beaches which, unlike desert dunes, have ample rainfall and habitats of diverse organisms. The largest and the most famous in Japan is the Tottori Sand Dunes (Tottori Sakyu), where visitors can enjoy superb views, camel rides, paragliding, and other fun activities. I got up early this morning to see sand dunes with no footprints on, a masterpiece created by a whim of nature. But, alas, it was quickly erased by my son running all over it. For him, it was just a giant sand box to play in.
