KOSHIEN STADIUM

甲子園[KŌSHIEN]

A baseball park in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture that opened in 1924. It is a home stadium for the Hanshin Tigers. It also hosts the semiannual national high-school baseball tournaments in spring and summer and is thus revered as the mecca of baseball by HS baseballers. There is a tradition where those who have lost a game at the tournament collect soil from the stadium as a souvenir. An old gentleman I know still loves to watch Koshien games on TV every summer with a jar of soil on his desk. In his mind, he is still chasing a ball even after so many years.
